Kathleen Worrell

Kathleen Worrell

A resident of Nacogdoches, Texas, Kathleen was originally an oil painter but switched to watercolor six years ago and has never looked back. She received a BFA from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and a Master‘s of Art Education from the University of Georgia. She has painted in workshops under watercolorists such as Frank Webb, Jan Kunz, and Janet Rogers. Her style ranges from representational to abstract with a focus on mood and shadow. She is a member of Watercolor East Texas (WET), the Lufkin Art Guild (LAG), and the Southwest Watercolor Society (SWS). She has been awarded 2nd place, the Reese Kennedy Memorial Award, the Daniel Smith Award, and honorable mention in the annual juried WET shows in 2003-2006. Her painting “Sunflowers” was exhibited in the 2005 SWS show, and in 2007 she received 1st place from the Lufkin Art Guild for her painting “Rockport Harbor”.

My inspiration: I am fascinated with the transparency of watercolor and the effect of layer upon layer of color. In particular, I am intrigued by the emotional content inspired by dramatic shadowing of objects and places. With watercolor I am able to build intense shadows without losing the objects buried within.
